New Greek Bakery in Newcastle: where we are and the story behind it

If you have been told there is a new Greek bakery opening in Newcastle, this is it. New Greek Bakery, on Clayton Road in Jesmond, is the first dedicated Greek bakery cafe the city has had.

We are not a coffee shop with a few pastries on the side. We are a proper Greek bakery cafe, serving authentic Greek pastries, sandwiches and desserts, with proper Greek coffee to go with them.

Where to find us

New Greek Bakery is at 8 Clayton Road, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 4RP. It is a five minute walk from Jesmond Metro station and easy to reach from anywhere in central Newcastle.

We are right in the middle of Jesmond, surrounded by independent restaurants, cafes and shops. Street parking on Clayton Road and the surrounding streets, and pay and display across most of the area.

Opening hours when we open

Monday to Saturday from 7:00 to 18:00. Sunday from 8:00 to 16:00. Early enough to grab breakfast on the way to work and open late enough to come in for an afternoon coffee and a pastry.

The story behind the bakery

New Greek Bakery is the second business from the team behind New Greek, the Greek street food restaurant on Chillingham Road in Heaton. The restaurant opened in Newcastle and quickly became one of the city's most talked about food spots. Authentic gyros, homemade skewers, traditional dishes that take real time and care to make.

The food took off. Reels and TikToks of the gyros and the mix grill have been seen tens of millions of times. People come in from across Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and beyond. The restaurant works because the food is real Greek food, not the watered-down version most places serve.

The bakery is the same approach applied to a different part of Greek food culture. Where the restaurant focuses on dinner and grill food, the bakery is built around mornings, breakfast pastries, and the cafe culture that makes Greek life so good. Same family. Same standards. A completely different experience.

Why Jesmond

Jesmond made sense. It is one of Newcastle's busiest, most independent neighbourhoods. People here know good food, expect quality, and support local businesses. There are excellent coffee shops and bakeries already in the area, but no Greek bakery anywhere in the city. Bougatsa, freddo espresso, spanakopita, baklava, all the things that are a part of daily life in Greece, none of it exists in Newcastle right now.

Clayton Road has the right footfall, the right neighbours, and the right kind of customer. Students from the universities, professionals working from home, families, people walking through to the shops and the Metro. It is a part of Newcastle that wakes up early and stays busy all day.

What you will find when we open

Authentic bougatsa with crisp phyllo and warm semolina custard inside. Spanakopita with proper feta and spinach. Baklava soaked in honey. Greek sandwiches and desserts. Freddo espresso and freddo cappuccino, the iced coffees Greece is famous for. Proper Greek coffee, brewed slowly the traditional way.

Authentic Greek flavours. Greek ingredients where it matters. Recipes that go back generations.
